Gordon Browns new Gambling Tax

Chancellor of the Exchequer has new plans to introduce a new gambling tax, Mr Gordon Brown will announce plans in next month's Budget that will set the wheels in motion for the regulation and licensing of the online gambling industry.

It is expected that in return for a small amount of tax, companies can obtain a UK licence and continue operating overseas. The amount of tax is not confirmed but could be as low as 2 percent. The new tax will be called Remote Gaming Duty. This compromise would allow gambling companies to avoid British VAT.

September is the month that companies will be allowed for the first time to relocate to the UK and obtain a licence under the Gambling Act. However, all gambling firms have said they would never relocate to the UK if they had to pay a tax on gross wins like high street casinos do.

Head of online gambling at Ladbrokes Mr John O'Reilly, was pleased with the plans, confirming that if the rate of tax was less than 3 percent, Ladbrokes would have no problem signing up for a UK licence.

Blackpools Last Casino Hope

MPs from the Blackpool area have made there way to Westminster for critical talks with Tessa Jowell, the UK's Culture Secretary, these talks are due to take place today in a bid to save Blackpool's super casino dream, according to a report by the Blackpool Gazette.

MP’s Joan Humble, Gordon Marsden, and Ben Wallace from the Fylde Coast only have 45 minutes to persuade Mrs. Jowell at her Westminster offices not to accept the UK Casino Advisory Panel’s recommendation that the UK's first regional casino license be awarded to Manchester.

One of the key points will be to urge Mrs. Jowell to allow MP’s to have two separate votes when the recommendations come to Parliament, which is expected to be later this month.

There plan is to get the vote on the regional casino license separated from the vote to confirm the locations of the 16 other smaller casinos. That would give MP’s the chance to go forward with the recommendations for the smaller casinos while contesting the surprise recommendation of Manchester for the regional casino.

Israel Ban Online Casinos

An Israeli court set a new precedent this week in a ruling against online gambling and poker operator, this Israeli court case involving Gibraltar based CEO Michael Carlton of Victor Chandler, effectively banning online gambling companies from delivering any online services to customers in Israel.

The court said that "A foreign company operating an online gambling site may not hide behind the fact that the company and its servers sit in another country, and it is breaking the law if does not block access to Israelis".

Gambling in Israel, like France and several other European countries, is a monopoly controlled by a state-run gaming board.

Victor Chandler launched an aggressive marketing campaign in Israel in 2006, complete with adverts on billboards and buses, compleat with a Hebrew website. Victor Chandler had remarked that Israel had rapidly become its second-biggest market amongst the customers it serves from over 160 countries.

But Israeli authorities were becoming increasingly unhappy about the encroachment of online gaming operators into their state-run monopoly.

This is another nail in the coffin for online gaming firms based on Gibraltar
