New Tax rises could Kill Super Casinos

Chancellor Brown plans to introduce high taxes on Super Casinos operators could scupper the chances of a Super Casino coming to Great Yarmouth, according to a senior industry insider the new tax proposals include taxing slot machines at massive £5000 each, meaning a the 1250 machines proposed by any super casino bid would incur a start-up fee of £6.25 million in tax alone.
The news was not greeted very well from the gaming industry yesterday, with senior officials claiming that the tax is to high and it could wreck plans for new casino developments across the country.
Great Yarmouth’s proposal for new Super Casino involves working with the hotel chain the Hilton Group. Great Yarmouth council hope a casino may give a much needed boost to regeneration for a deprived area.

Blackpool speak out over Casino bid

Supporters of Blackpools bid to host the first UK Super Casino, spoke out against a government-commissioned report that suggested there was not enough space in the city Blackpool for a Super Casino.
Mr Mark Etches, a gaming consultant and former MD of Leisure Parcs, branded the report as a Load of rubbish, saying that the reports conclusions were not backed up by the evidence.
The report, which claimed that Blackpool had no space left for a development on such a large scale, this is a huge setback for Blackpool Casino bid – a frontrunner for the casino license up until that point.
But Blackpool council leaders although angry about the report, claim not to be taking the reports conclusions seriously.

Birmingham City failed casino bid

Birmingham City Football Club hopes to build a new stadium with money funded by a new Super Casino have been dashed today after the city council opted to support a rival bid from the Birmingham NEC.
Birmingham FC had hoped the local council would recommend their bid for consideration by the governments advisory panel, which will go on to select one site for the first Super Casino in the UK. But despite repeated assurances from chief executive, Karen Brady of Birmingham FC, that the clubs bid was superior to that of the Birmingham NEC, the local council disagreed, and today voted in favour of the rival bid.
Speaking after the decision, Birmingham council leader Cllr Mike Whitby said: We believe that in recommending the Birmingahm NEC bid we have created the best opportunity of winning the bid for a regional Super Casino for the city of Birmingham.

Birmingham NEC, front runner for first Super Casino

Birmingham’s bid for a UK Super Casino to be built at the National Exhibition Centre has apparently been boosted by a report from the office of the Deputy Prime Minister, that was made public this week.
An independent inquiry, carried out by the consultancy firm Roger Tym and Partners on the behalf of John Prescott’s department appears to suggest the Birmingham NEC as a suitable site for the regional Super Casino, whilst dashing the hopes of previous front runner Blackpool.
Birmingham is praised for having an established casino presence, with the NEC’s Super Casino bid receiving special mention.
Coventrys bid also came in for praise, while London, Manchester and Sheffield were not discounted.
To the dismay of Blackpool City councillors their bid ran into trouble, with the report suggesting there was no space in Blackpool for a regional Super Casino.
Blackpool had widely been considered to be heading the race for the government’s approval. Although government officials insisted no decisions had yet been made about the future location of the countrys first Super Casino, it is clear this report will have some bearing on the final decision.

Dumfries and Galloway want New Casinos

Dumfries and Galloway have put forward two towns as candidates for new casino licenses.
Stranraer and Gretna, in Dumfries and Galloway, are to be put forward for two of the 17 uk casino licenses the UK government will issue across Scotland, England and Wales.
Although the two towns in Dumfries and Galloway have a small population of around 147,000, the local licensing board argues that regeneration plans and transport links mean the towns would be able to host small casinos and also claims that in addition the ferry links between Stranraer and Northern Ireland will help to ensure the casinos success.

Rod Stewart loses at Las Vegas

Rod Stewart has lost his 3 year long legal battle against the Rio Hotel in Las Vegas, and has been ordered to pay up to the tune of nearly £1.7 million. Mr Stewart has been involved in a court dispute with the Rio Hotel after they took him to court for failing to repay an advance. The dispute started when Rod Stewart cancelled a Millennium New Year’s Eve gig because he was not fully recovered from throat surgery he had a few months earlier. But in what appears to have proved to be a failed gamble, Stewart elected to hold on the advance paid to him by the Rio hotel. This obviously didn’t sit too well with the Las vegas casino, who demanded repayment, in which Mr Stewart was not forthcoming. The Rio then decided to pursue the matter through the courts, and now that decision appears to have been vindicated. The federal judge ruled in the casinos favour, ordering Mr Stewart to pay £1.7 million to the casino, along with 150,000 in legal fines to the court.

Cardiff goes for £700 million Super Casino development

Cardiff city council is going to launch a bid to host the UKs first Super Casino development, planning for the new Super Casino is to be a part of a new £700 million international sports village development.
This new sports village development is designed to attract teams preparing for the 2012 London Olympics, but the council says it needs the casino in order to help finish building the village in time. Calling the Super Casino bid launch a crucial stage in the development of the international sports village, Cardiff council leader Rodney Berman echoed calls from other council leaders across the UK for the Gambling Act to be altered to allow more Super Casinos. Currently the new UK Gambling Act allows for only one Super Casino, but council leaders across the UK are calling for the number to be increased to the eight originally suggested.
Mr Berman went to say that “a new casino would help maximise the potential of the new international sports village as a world class sporting and leisure facility and give Cardiff a fantastic opportunity to play a big part in the coming 2012 Olympics.”The council have named the UK/Australian firm Aspers as the company which will operate the new Super Casino if the bid is successful.
